What It Was Like Growing Up Spiritually Sensitive as a Christian

This is something I rarely talk about openly because I know many Christians immediately become uncomfortable when certain spiritual experiences are mentioned.

But I also know there are many people silently going through experiences they cannot fully explain, and they feel afraid, isolated, or judged because of it.

I was raised Catholic and grew up genuinely loving God from a very young age. But even as a child, I already knew I was experiencing things differently from other people.

When I was around three years old, I became aware that I could sense and perceive things other people around me did not seem to notice.

At first, I thought everyone experienced life this way.

So I stayed quiet about it.

When I Started Seeing “Essence”

By the time I was around fifteen years old, something became even more noticeable.

When I looked at people, I would sometimes perceive colors, impressions, or images surrounding them.

Some people would call this seeing “auras.”

But honestly, I never fully liked that word because it became too associated with modern spiritual trends and New Age ideas.

The best way I can personally describe it is:

seeing a person’s essence.

It was not always literal colors in a dramatic way.

Sometimes it felt more like:

  • emotional impressions
  • spiritual atmosphere
  • inner heaviness
  • brightness
  • emotional energy connected to the person’s state

And strangely enough, over time I noticed certain patterns.

Some people carried:

  • darker heaviness when deeply sad, spiritually lost, or physically sick
  • brighter impressions when emotionally peaceful or spiritually grounded
  • almost no strong impressions during emotionally neutral periods

But what surprised me most was this: some people who were suffering deeply still carried very bright essence around them.

Especially people who:

  • remained faithful during hardship
  • understood their purpose
  • stayed spiritually aware despite pain
  • carried genuine kindness and humility

That taught me something important very early: external happiness and inner spiritual condition are not always the same thing.

The Loneliness of Keeping It Hidden

One of the hardest parts of growing up this way was not necessarily the experience itself.

It was the isolation.

I tried mentioning it to some people before, including family members, but many dismissed it immediately.

As a Christian, this became especially confusing because the Bible warns seriously about spiritual deception and forbidden practices.

So I grew up constantly questioning:

“Is there something wrong with me?” “Am I deceived?” “Why do I experience this?”

And honestly, many Christians reacted harshly whenever topics like this came up.

Some immediately called it:

  • demonic
  • dangerous
  • sinful
  • evil

Without even listening carefully to the experience itself.

That created a lot of fear inside me for many years.

What a Catholic Nun Told Me Changed My Perspective

One of the few people who approached the situation calmly was a Catholic nun I once spoke with honestly.

I will never forget what she told me.

She said:

“Perhaps God allowed this sensitivity to remain in your life so you would always remember the true source must be Him.”

That stayed deeply in my heart.

Because one thing I have always understood very clearly is this: if a person has unusual sensitivity, they can become spiritually vulnerable very easily.

Pride can enter. Curiosity can become dangerous. The desire for control can grow. Spiritual confusion can happen.

This is why I strongly believe people who experience unusual spiritual sensitivity must remain deeply grounded in:

  • prayer
  • humility
  • discernment
  • spiritual guidance
  • moral discipline
  • relationship with God

Because not every spiritual experience should automatically be trusted blindly.

Spiritual Gifts Without God Can Become Dangerous

One thing I have learned over the years is that sensitivity itself is not automatically holiness.

A person can perceive things and still misuse those experiences badly.

That is why discernment matters constantly.

I personally believe the true fruits of any spiritual experience matter deeply.

For example: does the experience lead a person toward:

  • peace
  • humility
  • compassion
  • wisdom
  • prayer
  • love for God
  • emotional healing

Or does it lead toward:

  • pride
  • obsession
  • fear
  • superiority
  • confusion
  • manipulation
  • darkness

Because the fruits eventually reveal the spirit behind something.

I Did Not Choose This Experience

I think this is something important many people misunderstand.

People often assume that spiritually sensitive individuals are intentionally seeking strange experiences or trying to rebel against Christianity.

But many people did not choose these experiences at all.

In my case, these sensitivities existed long before I even fully understood religion, spirituality, or theology.

And honestly, there were many moments I wished I could simply become “normal” and not carry the confusion surrounding it.

But over time I stopped asking:

“Why am I different?”

And started asking:

“How can I stay close to God while carrying this responsibly?”

That changed everything.

Why Discernment Matters More Than Labels

I think modern society often becomes too extreme on both sides.

Some people romanticize every spiritual experience automatically. Others condemn everything immediately without discernment.

But reality is often more complicated.

As Christians, discernment is essential.

Not fear. Not obsession. Not blind acceptance. Not blind rejection.

Discernment.

Because spiritual sensitivity without wisdom can become dangerous. But fear without understanding can also wound sincere people deeply.

My Faith Became Stronger, Not Weaker

Ironically, these experiences never pulled me away from God.

They pushed me toward Him more deeply.

Because the more I realized how limited human understanding truly is, the more I understood my need for:

  • prayer
  • humility
  • protection
  • spiritual wisdom
  • surrender to God

I genuinely believe that if God allows unusual sensitivities in someone’s life, then that person must become even more disciplined spiritually, not less.

Because gifts without spiritual maturity can easily become destructive.

The Importance of Spiritual Guidance

This is why I strongly encourage spiritually sensitive people not to isolate themselves.

Having:

  • spiritual directors
  • wise mentors
  • grounded Christian guidance
  • prayer life
  • emotional stability

matters deeply.

No one should navigate spiritual experiences entirely alone or through ego.

Because human beings can misunderstand things very easily.

Not Everything Spiritual Is Automatically Evil

I know this topic makes many Christians uncomfortable.

And honestly, I understand why.

There are real dangers spiritually. There is deception. There are unhealthy obsessions.

But I also believe God understands the heart completely.

And I do not believe every spiritually sensitive person should automatically be condemned without compassion, wisdom, and discernment.

Especially when the person themselves sincerely desires:

  • goodness
  • truth
  • humility
  • prayer
  • closeness to God

At the end of the day, I believe the true question is not:

“Does a person experience unusual things?”

The deeper question is:

“Where is this leading the soul?”

Because anything that genuinely brings a person closer to truth, humility, love, discernment, and God should be approached carefully, prayerfully, and with wisdom rather than immediate fear alone.
