Spiritual Gifts or Divination? How Can Christians Tell the Difference?

One of the questions I hear most often is:

"If the Bible warns against divination, how can there be prophets, visions, and saints who seemed to know things before they happened?"

It is a sincere question.

And it deserves a careful answer.

Throughout Scripture, God occasionally revealed future events through prophets.

Throughout Christian history, there have also been holy men and women whose lives included extraordinary spiritual experiences.

Yet the Bible also strongly warns against seeking occult knowledge, divination, or attempting to manipulate spiritual powers.

So where is the difference?

The answer is not simply what someone knows.

It is where the gift comes from, why it is given, and what fruit it produces.

God Has Always Spoken Through Chosen Servants

The Bible contains many examples of men and women through whom God revealed His plans.

Moses received God's guidance for Israel.

Samuel warned kings.

Elijah performed miracles through God's power.

Daniel interpreted dreams and visions.

In the New Testament, Agabus foretold a coming famine and later warned Paul the Apostle about his imprisonment.

None of these people claimed power for themselves.

They pointed people back to God.

Extraordinary Gifts Did Not End With the Bible

Throughout Christian history, many believers have reported remarkable spiritual experiences.

The Catholic Church has recognized that some saints were believed to have received extraordinary charisms, always understood as gifts freely given by God rather than powers they controlled.

Examples often discussed include:

• Padre Pio
• Teresa of Ávila
• John Vianney
• Faustina Kowalska
• the children associated with the reported apparitions at Sanctuary of Fátima

Whether discussing biblical prophets or later saints, one pattern repeatedly appears.

The gift was never the center.

God was.

The Difference Is Not the Ability

Many people assume the difference between a saint and an occult practitioner is simply whether someone appears to know hidden things.

That is far too simplistic.

The real question is:

What is the source?

Christian tradition teaches that genuine spiritual gifts are never used for personal power, financial manipulation, or control over others.

They are received with humility.

They are exercised in obedience to God.

They call people to conversion, repentance, prayer, and charity.

Occult practices, by contrast, seek hidden knowledge or power apart from God and are consistently warned against in Scripture.

Look at the Fruits

One of the simplest ways to discern is to examine the fruit.

Does the experience lead a person toward:

• humility?
• prayer?
• repentance?
• love?
• peace?
• deeper trust in God?

Or does it produce:

• fear?
• obsession?
• dependency?
• pride?
• manipulation?
• confusion?

Jesus Himself taught that we recognize people by their fruits.

Good fruit matters.

The Saints Never Made Themselves the Destination

One thing I admire about the saints is their remarkable humility.

Despite extraordinary experiences, they did not invite people to become dependent on them.

Instead, they consistently pointed beyond themselves.

Toward Christ.

Toward prayer.

Toward the sacraments.

Toward a life of holiness.

That humility is not a small detail.

It is one of the clearest signs that the focus was never personal greatness.

A Gift Is Not a Badge of Holiness

It is also important to remember that extraordinary gifts alone do not make someone holy.

The New Testament speaks of spiritual gifts, but it places even greater emphasis on love, humility, and holiness.

A person may claim remarkable experiences.

The more important question is whether their life reflects Christ.

Character matters more than extraordinary claims.

Discernment Is Essential

Not every spiritual claim is authentic.

Not every vision comes from God.

Not every message should be accepted without discernment.

The Christian life has always called believers to test what they hear carefully, remain rooted in Scripture, seek wise spiritual guidance, and avoid becoming fascinated with the extraordinary for its own sake.

Our faith is built on Christ, not on spectacular experiences.

When People Seek Guidance

Over the years, I have met people searching for certainty about relationships, careers, illness, or the future.

Many arrive carrying fear rather than peace.

One thing I have learned is that authentic spiritual guidance should never increase dependence on a person.

It should increase trust in God.

A good guide does not replace prayer.

A good guide encourages it.

A good guide does not claim control over the future.

A good guide helps people seek wisdom, discernment, and peace while remembering that our lives remain in God's hands.

A Final Thought

Perhaps the greatest difference between a gift from God and divination is not what appears extraordinary.

It is where the experience ultimately leads.

If it leads us away from God, toward fear, control, pride, or unhealthy dependence, we should be cautious.

If it leads us toward humility, truth, repentance, love, and a deeper relationship with Christ, its fruits deserve careful and prayerful consideration.

The greatest miracle has never been knowing tomorrow.

The greatest miracle is allowing God to transform our hearts today.
